Aereo Requests Emergency Ruling To Keep From Bleeding To Death

Aereo Bleeding To Death

It’s been over a month since the Supreme Court passed a ruling stating that Aereo was operating its TV streaming services illegally. Now the company is requesting a federal court in Manhattan to pass an emergency ruling that will allow it to resume operations and start earning revenue.

The company is facing a tough financial situation after having stopped operations and has categorically stated it is, “figuratively bleeding to death” because it has not been making any money since it stopped its operations following the fateful Supreme Court ruling. It has categorically states that if it is not allowed to resume operations it may not survive.

The Manhattan Federal judge has responded by saying that the company is making the request without permission even going ahead to say that it “jumped the gun” by forwarding the application. As a result, the judge has declined to make a decision on the application leaving Aereo wallowing in the same predicament it has been facing since June when its antenna – based transmission of recorded and live broadcast programs was put to an end due to a violation of US copyright law.

Aereo Now A Cable TV Company

Aereo cannot continue operating as a cable company without a license from the US Copyright Office. The Copyright Office has said that it will not issue Aereo with a license until the courts determine the status of the company. Is it a cable TV company or is it a TV streaming services company?

At the start, Aereo came to the industry hoping to change it in terms of how things were being done. It was very innovative in using small antennas to provide its customers with live and recorded broadcasts. Now, after hitting a brick wall, it wants to conform to the industry’s way of doing things and turn itself into a cable – TV Company.

In the meantime, the company is incurring staggering costs to keep afloat with no income at hand. If the court accepts its application, the company will now have to play by the rules – a path that will send it back to the basics. This means paying retransmission fees for broadcasts and carriage fees for cable programs.

UPDATE: Aereo loses court request for emergency licence
